NAPPANEE — Things were buzzing at Rocket Science Ice Cream Shop on a recent Friday when camera crews from The Food Network and The Cooking Channel arrived at the shop inside Coppes Commons.
Owner Steve Helmuth said the camera crews and representatives from the cable television channels were on location from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. shooting videos and interviewing people.
“It was a pretty exciting time for us,” he said.
Helmuth said the segments about the ice cream shop are scheduled to appear in July or August and when he has more information he will let people know.
Helmuth said he wasn’t entirely sure how The Food Network heard about Rocket Science.
“When I first got the call I asked, ‘how did this come about’?” He said he was told they were looking for places that are not a franchise and he assumes they researched online.
Helmuth said he was told that the Food Network also has a magazine that is doing an article featuring 50 different ice cream shops — one for each state of the union. Out of those 50 shops they chose 10 to be interviewed for live footage.
Rocket Science Ice Cream is made fresh in front of the customer using the low temperature of liquid nitrogen to create flash frozen ice cream. Helmuth started the business after being laid off from a local recreational vehicle company. He first used a vendor truck that was moved to a stationary site for the summer months. In 2011, Rocket Science moved into its permanent location inside Coppes Commons, 401 E. Market St.
Helmuth said he and his staff are always coming up with new flavors. He said last month’s flavor of the month; “Take Five” has been very popular. The flavor contains real peanut butter, pretzels, chocolate fudge and caramel. This month’s flavor of the month is strawberry.
“We use fresh strawberries that have never been frozen or processed,” he said.
Rocket Science also serves coffee and other beverages and is now operating on its summer schedule. Hours are Monday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Closed on Sunday.
