UPDATE: Victims, accused murderer identified in Kosciusko County murder

THE GOSHEN NEWS

---- — A Warsaw woman was arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder and burglary overnight.

Arrested was Sonya Lynn Armontrout, 42, Warsaw.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Detectives said the murder victim was Steven L. Carman, 51, 44 EMS B10 Lane, Pierceton. The victim of attempted murder was Joseph A. Glant, 54, Warsaw.

According to police, a 911 call came in about a possible shooting at Carman’s home at 7:18 p.m. The home is near the Barbee Lake Chain, south of North Webster.

Upon arriving at the home, officers found the suspected shooter, Armontrout. She surrendered immediately without incident, police said.

Carman was found in his home suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Kosciusko County Coroner Michael Wilson pronounced Carman dead at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers with the Kosciusko County Major Crimes Unit allege that Armontrout broke into Carman’s home earlier in the evening and hid in a bedroom closet. Carman, along with Glant, entered the home. Armontrout suddenly exited the closet and fired a 9mm handgun, police said. Glant was struck in the lower torso.

Armontrout then reportedly fired the handgun several times at Carman, striking him in the chest area multiple times.

Police said Armontrout then began to stab Carman in the back with a knife as he stumbled down a hallway to the living room area. Armontrout reportedly followed and shot Carman in the head multiple times.

Police said the handgun and the knife were recovered from the scene.

Glant was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition this morning. Officers said they found two small children soon after arriving at the scene. Those children belonged to Carman and Armontrout. The children were not hurt and were placed into the custody of the Department of Child Services.

Armontrout is being held without bond. The prosecutor’s office has preliminarily charged her with murder, attempted murder and burglary.
