'The Local' will feature items created by Goshen artisans

GOSHEN — Local craftsmen and artisans will display their work in a new space in the renovated former Jaxson Cleaners building, 211 S. Fifth St.

Named, The Local, a public reception is set for Friday at 5 p.m. during First Fridays.

Travis Yutzy was busy Wednesday at The Local shaping reclaimed poplar boards from the former cleaner’s interior. He has worked the wavy grains of greens and browns of the poplar into door framing, shelves and trim work. He has also created unique backgrounds for display areas using a mixture of salvaged wood.

Yutzy specializes in creating innovative interior fixtures and will be one of the artisans who has work on display.

According to The Local spokeswoman Kalaine Fields, the front of the building will house a retail area that features arts and crafts created by local people. On display will be locally designed and crafted motorcycles by Janus Motorcycles, traditionally built skin-on-frame watercraft by Blue Dog Light Craft, furniture by Hedge House Furniture and Conrad Grebel, works of art created by Meghan Borland and fixtures by Yutzy.

The artisans will display original pieces for sale and are available for commissioned work.

Eric Kanagy, owner of Red Post, owns the building, which has been used for start-up businesses. The recycling company Polykarmic used to occupy the middle section of the building, according to Fields, but was denied a zoning variance by city officials so it could continue. That action opened up a large space.

“This is great space to utilize,” Fields said as she looked around the large interior with a high ceiling supported by metal beams.

Part of that space will be used by Blue Dog Light Craft, according to Fields.

“Goshen has great people doing great things,” she said. “Why not use downtown space?”
