LaGrange County Fair coming to a close

— LAGRANGE — LaGrange County’s 60th annual 4-H Fair is winding down this weekend. The animals have been judged, the cakes decorated, the queen chosen.

Nothing much left to do but cricket spitting, paper airplane flying and frog jumping. Since the morning admission gate was free on Friday, the contest arena was packed with kids, strollers and mommies.

From a 3-year-old to a 28-year-old, the competition for the cricket spitting contest was stiff and interesting.

Cheyenne Metcalf, 13, of Wolcottville had to fill her mouth with mints after she spit out her cricket.

As clear as a bell, contestant 3-year-old Kya Roose of Wolcottville held the cricket in her hand, looked at her mother, who just told her to put it in her mouth, and said, ”It is disgusting!”

Cricket spitting originated at Purdue University in 1998. The entomology department holds an annual event for insect enthusiasts called the “Bug-Out.”
