Commuter students visit newly-renovated lounge

GOSHEN — Mateo Saucedo stood in the kitchenette of the commuter lounge on the campus of Goshen College.

The commuter students attending Goshen College met together for the first time Saturday after registering for classes.

Saucedo, the new commuter club counselor, was happy to tell them about the renovated lounge in the Union Building.

“This is very beautiful and state of the art,” Saucedo said. “It’s right-on, they (college officials) nailed it (the renovation). Goshen College is something special for providing this.”

He told the students they can bring their own lunch, and have their own lockers.

“You will be assigned your own lock, it’s free unless you lose it,” Saucedo said. “You can study and relax. You can invite a person but not a group.”

The L-shaped lounge with private study space is just for commuters who commute back and forth to the college, he added.

There are about 50 to 60 full-time and part-time students that are eligible to join the commuter club.

“I’m excited and proud to be a counselor of this club. I plan to be available two to three times a week during lunch,” he said. “I want to be visible. This is your lounge. We will elect officers.

The students had an informational meeting in the Koinonia Room in the Church-Chapel before walking over to the view the lounge for the first time.

“We are serving you, the commuters,” Saucedo said, smiling. “We want you to be successful.”
