C.R. 40 resident concerned about Benteler traffic

GOSHEN — A C.R. 40 resident has a complaint against a local manufacturer that he hopes the Elkhart County Commissioners can resolve.

Tom Bigler asked the commissioners at their Monday morning meeting to work on the issue of Benteler employees using the road to move trailers between company locations. The company has a warehouse operation in the city of Goshen at the intersection of Woodfield Road (C.R. 40) and Corrie Drive and also has a factory to the north of that location at 910 Eisenhower Drive South in Goshen.

Bigler said he has suggested the truck drivers go through the Keystone RV complex north of Benteler to access C.R. 38. “But we had the door slammed shut for that,” he said.

“Four times that road has been closed because of tractor-trailer mishaps in the past 14 to 15 months,” Bigler said. He said the mishaps occur because the yard trucks — designed to move trailers within the factory yard — are being driven too fast and the trailers slip out of the fifth-wheel hitch. He also said the drivers do not lift the trailer jackstands while traveling down the road.

Bigler said he has contacted the sheriff’s department and the Indiana State Police for help. He said Sheriff Brad Rogers responded to the last two incidents.

Commissioner Mike Yoder said a woman who lives in that area also contacted him last week about the issue of truck drivers speeding along the road and suggested a lower speed limit.

“The problem is they will just ignore them (the lower speed limits),” Yoder said. “Let us look into it a little.”

In one agenda item other than paying county bills, the commissioners appointed Mandy Gerber to a seat on the Nappanee Public Library board.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
