Elkhart police officers involved in fatal shooting


ELKHART — A burglary call in Elkhart Sunday led to the death of one of two suspects after he reportedly pointed a weapon at police and officers fired on him.

Indiana State Police are investigating the Elkhart police shooting as a matter of Elkhart Police Department's protocol of having an outside agency complete an investigation involving their officers.

State police report that earlier Sunday afternoon Elkhart police officer’s responded to a burglary in progress call at 332 W. Hubbard. Upon arriving a foot pursuit ensued between officers and two people who were seen leaving the house.

One person was caught and arrested without incident by police at 312 W. Lusher. The other suspect, state police said, continued to 328 W. Lusher, where he was shot by police after the man pointed a gun at the officers.

No officers were injured in the shooting. However, the suspect died as a result of the police gunfire, police said, adding that the victim’s name will be released in the next 24 hours.

State police detectives are on the scene interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.

The names of the officers involved in the shooting will be released over the next 48 hours by the Elkhart City Police Department, police said
