Purse auction raises money for local food pantries

SHIPSHEWANA — Two local service agencies got a boost Tuesday as 45 local businesses and designers worked with the LaGrange County Chamber of Commerce to auction purses.

Beth Sherman of the Chamber said the goal of $3,500 for the Power-of-the-Purse Auction was surpassed this year — $4,000 was earned. They had 117 bidders attend the luncheon at Shipshewana Town Center and more than 45 local businesses took part in the event to make it a success.

“We sold 19 purses this year,” Sherman said. One purse sold for $320.

Sherman said after the event, the results were so good Chamber officials are looking forward to a fourth annual Power-of-the-Purse event on 11-12-13.

The event is held to raise money for Community Harvest Food Bank and the LaGrange Clothes and Food Basket.
