Proposed Fairfield projects price tag $15.4M

BENTON – The numbers are in and curriculum changes at Fairfield Community Schools could mean approximately $15.4 million in updates and renovations throughout the district.

Board members saw preliminary architectural plans at their meeting Thursday.

The largest ticket would be renovations at Fairfield Junior-Senior High School, which could cost $9.9 million. Additional space there would include a music rehearsal area and small practice rooms, renovated commons area, additional classrooms and labs for agriculture, a larger weight room and additional locker rooms, additional general purpose classrooms and a large group instruction room that includes a small stage.

Millersburg Elementary School’s list of projects is $4.3 million, but there is $200,000 set aside in the capital projects fund for kindergarten classrooms that can be applied to the cost, bringing the amount needed to $4.1 million.

The project would convert the current kindergarten rooms into art and music rooms, use the current art space to expand the cafeteria, and add new locker rooms next to the gym that would be ADA-compliant. It would also add a new section to the building that would house four kindergarten classrooms, a family and consumer science lab and a science lab, and a Functional Skills classroom. Another section would include 2 classrooms for the junior high students and a shop/multipurpose space.

Work at Benton Elementary School would cost $888,000, but there is also $200,000 set aside in the capital projects fund to offset that total, bringing it to $688,000. Benton is in need of two more kindergarten classrooms, which would be added onto the building where the smaller playground to the south is now. Principal Dan Sharp said that area is not used often because of its size and the equipment could be moved to the other play areas for students.

Also included in the plan is a new transportation building, which would be big enough to allow for bus maintenance and inspection, as well as additional storage for the corporation. That would cost $600,000.
