GOSHEN — New Waterford Elementary School Principal Katrina Overton has much to look forward to as she and her husband, Larry, embark on a new life in northern Indiana.
The Goshen School Board approved hiring Overton Monday night. Overton currently resides in Chattanooga, Tenn., where she has served as principal and assistant principal in the Hamilton County schools.
A Columbus, Ohio, native, Overton grew up around education. Her dad is the retired assistant superintendent for Lima, Ohio, schools. She is a 25-year veteran educator herself — eight years in teaching and another 17 in administration.
Overton and her husband, Larry, a retired air traffic controller, decided to move north to be more central to their family. Their daughter, son-in-law and soon-to-be 3-year-old grandson live in Elkhart. Overton's mom and dad live in Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Larry's mom lives in the Indianapolis area. The couple also has two sons — one in Chattanooga and another in Florida.
"This is kind of a central location," Overton said prior to the board meeting. "With aging parents and family, we wanted to be closer."
Overton was introduced at Waterford today as the recommended candidate for the principal's position being vacated by Kim Gallagher. Overton will return May 16 to spend the day with the staff.
"I really felt at home there," she said.
For the first 90 days, Overton said all of her focus will be on building relationships with staff, students, families and the community.
Overton said she has three philosophies:
1 — Always make decisions in the best interest of the kids.
2 — Always ensure effective teaching and learning in every classroom.
3 — Use data to drive instruction and to make improvements in the building.
