Goshen Board of Public Works approves bigger grease trap

GOSHEN — GOSHEN — Goshen Board of Works and Safety members Monday approved a request by Pizzeria Venturi LLC for a variance to allow the replacement of the business’s existing hydro-mechanical grease trap with a new, high capacity automatic/mechanical grease trap.

According to Venturi owner Eric Kanagy, Pizzeria Venturi LLC plans to install a commercial dishwasher that will generate .89 gallons per minute of flow. That installation, he said, will put the facility into the Category A requirements under city ordinance 4625.

“Due to the building occupying 95 percent of the real estate where the building is located, we would like to request a variance to replace our existing hydro-mechanical grease trap with a 35 GPM automatic/mechanical grease trap,” Kanagy said in a prepared statement to the board. “I spoke with Tom Walters at the Water and Sewer Department, and he is supportive of our request and the 35 GPM mechanical grease trap size.”

The board agreed, and the request was approved unanimously.

Salon J

Also approved Monday was a request by Downtown Goshen Inc. and Salon J, 130 S. Main St., Goshen, to close the alleyway directly behind the salon’s building during the November First Friday’s event for a party celebrating the salon’s five-year anniversary. The request had been tabled at the board’s last meeting in order to give the salon time to notify nearby neighbors and seek their approval for the closure.

Other business

In other business, the board:

• Approved a request by Dennis and Susan Mark Landis for relief from the city’s hard surface driveway standards connected to a home they are constructing at 820 Steury Ave., Goshen.

• Approved a request by Jeremy Stutsman to allow Doug Risser, owner of the Menno Travel building, 210 S. Main St., Goshen, to place a Dumpster for no more than one week behind his building within the next two weeks for cleaning purposes. An additional request to allow the placement of Dumpsters behind the building as needed through the remainder of 2013 was also approved by the board.

• Granted the city engineering department permission to seek bids for the Chicago Avenue Reconstruction Project from Harrison Street to Indiana Avenue. The project will involve pavement removal, earthwork, asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, driveway and sidewalk construction, erosion control, installation of storm sewer, water main and their appurtenances and traffic control.

• Approved a request by the city engineering department to close the intersection of Fifth and Jefferson streets from Tuesday through Thursday to allow the installation of articulated block along Jefferson Street.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
