Healthy and happy at West Goshen Elementary

GOSHEN — Students from West Goshen Elementary observed health week last week, a week of special activities that Goshen Community Schools puts on to emphasis health of body and mind.

According to West Goshen nurse Elizabeth Vukovich, the week allows students to break the usual routine of classes and look forward to activities.

“We hope that these are activities that the kids will really remember and health week because they’ll look forward to the special activities that we plan,” she said.

The theme of this year’s week was “Smart Moves for a Healthy Body and Mind.”

The cafeteria staff served a dish that had broccoli in it every day and there was a presentation or activity for all the grades each day.

On Monday, Chris and Roy Pickler of Middlebury spoke to students about healthy eating and exercise. The Picklers were contestants on the NBC show “The Biggest Loser.”

On Tuesday, instructors from ATA Success martial arts studio in Linway Plaza gave a demonstration to students.

On Wednesday, all grades went on a mile walk around the school’s neighborhood, escorted by volunteers from the Bristol Posse horse group.

Thursday evening ,Chandler Elementary School staff hosted a communitywide health fair for all Goshen elementary students, and Friday professionals from Oaklawn hospital spoke to the students about coping and problem-solving skills.

“It seems like health week really does get more emphasis in the elementary schools,” Vukovich said.
