Hard work pays off: Fair auction tops $1M for first time

By SCOTT WEISSER
THE GOSHEN NEWS

GOSHEN — Sierra Walter was already having a banner year at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair. Then came the auction.

Walter, 18, Goshen was crowned fair queen on the festival’s opening day. A week later, her grand champion dairy market goat sold for a record $17,000.

Walter’s sale was reflective of a fair livestock auction that made history Friday.

The auction broke the million-dollar mark for the first time, the final total coming in at $1,042,127.60.

“It was pretty incredible,” Extension educator and auction coordinator Jeff Burbrink said after the sale ended. The previous auction record of $964,127.20 was set in 2011.

A 10-year 4-H member, Walter said she planned to donate 15 percent from her goat sale to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, with the rest going toward college and savings. Walter’s done fundraising for the foundation before, and is supportive of its work with good reason — she has cystic fibrosis.

According to foundation’s website, cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States, 70,000 worldwide.

“It will never go away,” Walter said of the disease’s presence in her life. But Walter added that despite having cystic fibrosis, she’s achieved much and is proud of her accomplishments.

Fair Board member Barney Beer also sounded proud Friday. Part of the buyers’ group for the 4-H member’s goat, he had high praise for Walter.

“I think this girl has incredible courage,” he said, and has always been a person who wanted to help others. Beer also said she’s been active in 4-H and been a leader.

“A true role model, I think, for young women,” he said of the Goshen teen.

After her record goat sale, Walter was looking ahead to her remaining fair activities. She planned to go to the Friday night rodeo, and not just as a spectator.

“I’m going to be barrel racing tonight,” Walter said that afternoon.

Friday’s auction totals are:
