‘Friends’ purchase property for new park

MIDDLEBURY — The Friends of Middlebury Parks recently purchased 3.4 acres of property in Middlebury from Forrest Wanberg Jr., president of the Wanberg National Popcorn Co. The property is along the shore of the Little Elkhart River, across from the former popcorn plant, adjacent to the Park Department office and Riverbend Park on East Warren Street in Middlebury.

The new park will be named the Old Mill Park and Trail in recognition of the former grist mill, the oldest structure in Middlebury, located within the popcorn plant building.

The purchase also was made possible through a grant from the Elkhart County Community Foundation to purchase property and begin development of the new park for Middlebury.

Treasurer for the Friends, Joel Miller, said, “The development of the park will be completed as funding is available, but will include multipurpose trails and a boardwalk, an informational kiosk, canoe launch, picnic tables and a parking area.”

President of the Friends, Levi King, added, “We appreciate the grant from the Elkhart County Community Foundation making this possible and we also thank Forrest for helping make this important addition to the Middlebury parks.”

The Friends of Middlebury Parks is a not-for-profit organization with a mission of enhancing the parks in Middlebury and assisting the Middlebury Parks Department in maintaining and improving the parks.

For additional information on the Old Mill Park and Trail or to become a member of the Friends of Middlebury Parks organization, contact Levi King at 574-596-6954.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
