They CAN help the hungry

GOSHEN — GOSHEN — The Mennonite Central Committee mobile meat canning station visited Goshen last week.

The canner was at The Depot in Goshen from Jan. 11 to 19. During the eight days it was here, 68,000 pounds of turkey were cut and canned for worldwide distribution to fight hunger.

According to Stanley Pletcher, one of the organizers for the operation, volunteers turned out 9,000 pounds of canned meat per day. Pletcher said that 270 Amish and various church groups signed up to help.

Pletcher said that the cost of the project is $120,000 and that the MCC is still accepting monetary donations to help pay for this year’s canning operation.
