This attic once had game

Hidden places

GOSHEN — The wooden covering on the third floor of the City Annex Building doesn’t look like a gym floor.

But it was designed and used that way when the building was built in 1905 as the Goshen High School.

“I remember (the late) Dean Henry (who attended school) talking about basketball games up there,” Dale Garber, curator of the Goshen Historical Museum, said.

There aren’t any other people that were part of the Historical Society who could provide memories of the old high school.

“The ones that we knew,” said Earlene Nofziger, president of the society’s Advisory Board, “are all gone now.”

Melissa Meade works with the Goshen Engineering Department in the building.

A large auditorium fills most of the room on the second floor and could be mistaken for a gym because it’s large and the floor isn’t wooden.

“But it’s not,” Meade said, walking up another flight of stairs to the third floor.

She looked around the large, cold room and the floor filled with rubble and dust after years of disuse.

“I can’t imagine how loud it would be having a ball bounce on the floor above you,” Meade said, shaking her head. “And the ceiling isn’t very tall.”

Two narrow brick facades, from ceiling to floor, face each other with visible outlines where basketball hoops once were placed. There are names written all over the bricks.

“I don’t think it will ever be redone,” Meade said. “It would cost too much, unfortunately.”

The third floor is not open to the public, she added.
