Local high school choirs, percussion group are state champs

GOSHEN — Choirs from Northridge and a percussion unit from Goshen are state champions in high school music competitions.

Show choirs at Northridge and Fairfield high schools competed in the Indiana State School Music Association’s state championship Saturday.

Two show choirs at Northridge High School took top honors.

The Starlights, a 36-member all girls choir, placed first for the second time since 2012 and the Northern Lights, a 39-member mixed choir, placed first for the first time.

“It was pretty exciting. It was incredible to see their reaction,” said Kyle Barker, director for Northern Lights. “There was a whole flood of emotions. You could see four different emotions on their faces. I think there was cheering for at least five minutes.”

The students left at 5:30 a.m. Saturday for the competition at Plainfield High School in Plainfield and returned to Middlebury at 3 a.m. Sunday.

“It was a 21-hour day, but that’s typical for them when they compete. We have to travel so far,” Barker said. “They work hard all school year and do everything you ask of them. When they do everything you ask of them, the trophy doesn’t matter, but it sure does feel nice to have it.”

Fairfield High School’s Fusion, a mixed show choir, and Expressions, an all girls’ show choir, placed fourth Saturday.

The Goshen High School Winter Concert Percussion ensemble placed first during the Winter Percussion state finals in Indianapolis Saturday. The Movement Percussion Ensemble placed third during the state finals.
