UPDATE: Snow emergency downgraded from 'warning' to 'watch'

GOSHEN — Elkhart County Commissioners have downgraded the snow emergency from a warning to a watch and have made the decision to reopen county offices Tuesday morning.

According to Capt. James Bradberry of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, motorists are cautioned that roadways are still covered in snow and ice and drifting on north and south routes may occur.  Those intending on traveling should use caution, leave early, drive slowly and be prepared for areas that are limited to one lane.

Elkhart County Highway crews are still attempting to clear roadways and subdivisions within the county.

“It is estimated that 15 to 20 percent of the roads will still be an issue in the morning,” according to Capt. Bradberry.  “Employers and businesses should be aware of these conditions and that their employees may encounter problems during their commute to work.”

Elkhart County is moving from a warning travel advisory to a watch travel advisory. Motorists are cautioned that “…conditions are threatening to the safety of the public.  During a local watch travel advisory, only essential travel such as to and from work or emergency situations is recommended. Emergency action plans should be implemented by schools, government agencies and other organizations.”
