NEW PARIS — A semi driver feels fortunate she was not injured when a train struck the trailer of her semi on C.R. 29 at about 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Rebecca Hopple said she was headed to a local cabinet manufacturer to make a pick up. She was crossing the railroad tracks on C.R. 29, just north of New Paris, when her semi trailer became stuck on the tracks.
“I couldn’t go forward and I couldn’t go backward,” Hopple said.
Another motorist told her a train was coming, so Hopple started to disconnect the trailer from the tractor — and then she saw the train.
Hopple said she jumped in her tractor, which was facing west, and drove.
The northbound Norfolk Southern train struck the empty trailer. The trailer was pushed approximately 150 feet.
There was minor damage to the train’s engine — if any — Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Jim Bradberry said.
Police investigated and said that the trailer’s jacks became stuck on the crossing. No one was injured.
