Goshen police begin 'bait bicycle' program

GOSHEN — Goshen police have announced a “bait bicycle” project as a way to combat bike thefts in the city.

Police report that the number of bike thefts in Goshen have been increasing over the last several months. When the upturn in thefts began, patrol officers began to brainstorm and implement new ways to fight that crime.

The officers developed a “bait bicycle” plan and, with the consent of the police administration, began to carry it out.

The project involves police placing a bicycle in an area where there have been increased problems with bike thefts. Officers wait a short distance away in an unmarked vehicle. According to police, at least two arrests for bike theft have been made so far through the program.

Officers will be moving the “bait” bike to different locations throughout the city in an attempt to catch would-be thieves and deter thefts.
