Reminisce days a big hit in Shipshewana

SHIPSHEWANA —  Diane Green and her aunt Lydia Moore drove from lower Illinois to Shipshewana Saturday morning to pick up quilting fabric.

“We were pleased to find out they were having a celebration of the old days,” Green said. “I enjoyed watching the spinning and weaving of the wool under the tent.”

The crowds for Shipshewana Reminisce were sparse but the demonstrations were interesting to those who stopped to observe. A local man of 20, Levi Miller borrowed the blacksmith’s coals to pound out a quick hand blade for the gathered spectators. Across the alley was Calvin Gingerich, a local wheelwright, demonstrating how he hand sets all of the spokes in a buggy wheel.

Michael Patel from Huntington watched in awe as the huge steam tractors powered a sawmill then later plowed a field.

“They are so huge and so noisy and all powered by burning wood and boiling water,” he said. “It is the first time I have seen anything like this.”

Logging and lumber was the main industry for the Shipshewana area up until the turn of the century. This event is held in early June and is a project of the Shipshewana Historical Society.
