Arctic front to bring back bitter cold, snow

The National Weather Service has issued a weather advisory for our area from late tonight and Thursday.

Another arctic front will track across the region late tonight into Thursday morning bring a reinforcing shot of cold air.

The combination of this cold air and windy conditions will lead to bitterly cold wind chills as low as -10 to -20 degrees Thursday morning. In addition, lake effect snow showers are expected to increase overnight into Thursday morning with 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation possible. This new snow combined with the windy conditions will lead to areas of blowing and drifting snow along with some significantly reduced visibilities Thursday morning.

Locally, in St. Joseph, Elkhart, LaGrange and Steuben counties in Indiana, and Cass, St. Joseph, Hillsdale and Branch counties, Mich., a winter weather advisory will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued a winter weather advisory for blowing snow and bitterly cold wind chills.

One to 2 inches of snow acculumlation is possible late tonight into Thursday.

West winds are expected to increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 35 mph overnight and early Thursday. This will result in areas of blowing and drifting snow and significantly reduced visibilities at times.

Wind chills are expected to drop to -10 to -20 degrees late tonight through early Thursday afternoon.


  • Visibility will be reduced to 1/4 of a mile or less at times.
  • Slick road conditions are possible for Thursday morning's commute.
  • Bitterly cold windchills could result in frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
