Awning, sign, brick facade collapse at Family Dollar in Syracuse

SYRACUSE — Snow is the likely culprit behind a the collapse of a 60-foot awning, plus a sign and a large portion of the north brick facade they were attached to at Family Dollar Sunday afternoon, while customers were inside.

According to Syracuse Fire Chief Mickey Scott, firefighters were calling to a building collapse at 12:51 p.m. Sunday at Family Dollar.

Firefighters discovered the awning, sign and a large portion of the brick wall had collapsed. The brick wall had broken away from the block wall that was actually the structural wall of the building, Scott said.

Customers and employees were inside the store at the time of the collapse. Those inside were assisted out of the building through an east door.

Scott said there were no reported injuries as a result of the collapse.

Emergency personnel stayed at the scene until 4:45 p.m.

The store will remain closed until after a structural engineer has evaluated the building and determined it safe to occupy. The building is owned by Garth McClain of Carmel, Ind.

Scott said, “The average weight of a cubic foot of snow is 15 pounds. This results in an unusual amount of weight on the roofs, awnings, etc. of structures due to the amounts of snow that we have received recently in our area, especially those that are flat or nearly flat.”
