Saturday expect anything from inches of snow, to sleet and freezing rain

The National Weather Service is calling for a wintry mix tonight and throughout Saturday, with Elkhart County seeing between 3 to 8 inches of snow and possibly sleet and freezing rain.

According to NWS, a low pressure system will approach the region from the southern Plains today into Saturday. Light snow will begin to overspread the region late this morning/early afternoon from the southwest.

Snowfall amounts today through midnight tonight will range from around a half inch north up to an inch and a half southwest. Highs today will range from the lower 20s northwest to the lower 30s southeast.

Precipitation will increase in intensity after midnight through the day on Saturday. As the low pressure system tracks into the area, warmer air will push northward and snowfall will begin to change over to a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain late overnight through Saturday morning.

Enough warm air is expected to push into the region during the day on Saturday that much of the southeast half of the forecast area will change over to mainly rain, before changing back to snow Saturday night (1 to 3 inch range on the graphic above).

Areas in the 5 to 8 inch range on the graphic above are expected to remain mainly snow through this time frame, with a period of a wintry mix possible during the day on Saturday.

The areas in the 3 to 5 inch range are expected to start out as snow and change over to mainly a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain during the day on Saturday, before changing back to snow Saturday night.

A winter storm watch remains in effect for LaPorte, St. Joseph and Elkhart counties in Indiana, and Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph counties in Michigan from 1 a.m. Saturday through 4 a.m. Sunday.
