ELKHART COUNTY FAIR: Showmanship winners have total control in the ring

GOSHEN — Taylor Stutzman, Milford, is used to showing pygmy goats and represented the Goat Club during the small animal Round Robin showmanship contest Thursday night.

The dog she was paired with during the competition Thursday night sensed a different competitor and decided to roll around on the floor of the Beef Dairy arena.

Stutzman calmly and gently worked with the dog, bringing it back to the business at hand — performing in the show ring.

“I had to remember to be calm and confident and know the show is not about how the animal acts,” she said. “It’s about me.”

Her showman skills with the dog, a cat, a rooster, a rabbit, and a llama impressed the judges enough for her to be named as the reserve champion.

Nathen Bailey, Wakarusa, representing the Poultry Club, was named the grand champion and received the banner and traveling trophy.

Round Robin is a competition among the top animal showpeople from the various 4-H clubs.

Bailey said his biggest challenge was the rabbit.

“There’s a lot of stuff to remember,” Bailey said. “I had no clue (about being grand champion). It’s just for fun.”

Both 4-Her’s said they prepared for the competition by going to the different barns and talking with others about their animals.

Other competitors in the small animal division included Drew Grimm, representing the Rabbit Club; Kylie Hill, representing the cat club; Leah Jennings, representing the Llama Club; and Katheryn Giddens, representing the Dog Club.

Before the large animal round robin began, spectators filled the arena to capacity, talking and laughing. The designated pooper scoopers kept the arena clear for the competitors and animals.

There was mooing with the dairy feeder steers, beef steers and dairy heifers and squealing from the swine during their turns in the arena. The lambs and goats added their voices, as well. It was during the horse competition that the judge asked the audience to be quiet so as not to spook the horses.

Lauryn Troyer, Goshen, representing the Goat Club, was named grand champion in the large animal category with her showman skills. She wiped the tears from her eyes after the announcement.

“No, I never expected it,” Troyer said of her win.

Tyler Resler, Wakarusa, representing the swine club, received reserve champion.

“I’m overwhelmed and I’m speechless,” Resler said, “and that’s all I can say.”

The other competitors in the large animal division included Ryan Kelly, representing the Lamb Club; Rachel Schrock, representing the Dairy Feeder club; John Trenshaw, representing the Dairy Club; Kelsey Schmucker, representing the Saddle Club; and Elizabeth Beer, representing the Beef Club.
