ELKHART COUNTY FAIR: Hershberger directs traffic with higher goal in mind

GOSHEN —Fair traffic is known to cause headaches for those attending the fair.

However, the volunteers who spend their days in the dusty parking lots wearing neon shirts are trying their best to make it run just that much smoother.

One such parking lot attendant volunteer is 25-year-old Sara Hershberger, Bristol, who volunteers along with members of her Middlebury church, River of Life Fellowship.

According to Hershberger, the money the fair gives the church for their parking work supports the churches mission fund, something near to Hershberger’s heart.

“This a great opportunity for me to help with that,” she said.

Volunteers sign up for four hour shifts. She said she signed up for Friday for eight hours, Tuesday and this Friday morning.

“I know it’s a sacrifice of my time but I’m working for the kingdom of the Lord, this is what we do, we just sacrifice our time to work for him,” she said.

“If there is something we can do to bring glory to his name, then (we do it).”

Hershberger said the first time she came to fair was when she was 18, but she enjoys being involved with it.

“I enjoy working with our parking crew and just people in general,” she said. “It’s fun to just be around a lot of people and smile and wave at them.”

Hershberger added that people are usually appreciative, especially when it is hot out, but some people are unhappy about the spot they get.

“Sometimes they don’t always like where we park them but we can’t really do anything about that,” she said.
