Elkhart County Commissioner approve Gatorade purchase

GOSHEN — The summer heat should now be a bit more bearable for county highway workers following a meeting of the Elkhart County Commissioners Monday morning.

During Monday’s meeting, the commissioners approved a request by County Highway Manager Jeff Taylor for the purchase of the sports drink Gatorade for highway employees to be used on particularly warm days.

According to County Auditor Pauline Graff, who presented the request on Taylor’s behalf, Taylor presented the idea with the understanding that the Gatorade purchases would only be made on the hottest days of the work week when water alone may not be enought to keep the workers up and on their feet.

“Via the email and phone conversation that I had with Jeff, I just said it would be an expense that I think would be fine as long as it’s approved by the commissioners, and it has to be for days that get really, really warm when the guys are sitting out there in the sun,” Graff said. “But it is a food-drink type item that we don’t usually pruchase unless we have your approval to pay those claims, so I just want something on record that says the commissioners approved this.”

Following the approval, County Commissioner Frank Lucchese joked that with the Gatorade purchases now approved, the temperature will likely drop into the 70s for the remainder of the summer.

“And that’s OK,” Graff said in response, “but when it’s in the 90s and the humidity is so high, we want to take care of our people.”
