Can sculptures to help animals

4-H clubs help support county’s food pantries.

LAGRANGE — These three “houses” were built from canned and packaged food to elicit donations from fairgoers.

In order to “vote” for your favorite house you donate money. The houses are next to the fair office in the 4-H building.

One house was assembled by the 4-H Dog Club; one by the Topeka 4-H Club and the dog house by the Howe 4-H Club.

The Howe 4-H Club used more than 400 cans of dog and cat food that will go to Paws and Claws food pantry in Howe. The food pantry helps those in the county who are having a difficult time with food for their pets.

The project was overseen by recently crowned 4-H Master Achiever Chanden Lawson, who is president of the 4-H Dog Club.

After the contest, the food is donated to the LaGrange Clothes and Food Basket and the dog house goodies are donated to ARK, the LaGrange no-kill animal shelter.

The winning club gets ice cream.

“We worked hard on this project, Lawson said. “It had almost been forgotten this year but we pulled together and got it done.”
