THE GOSHEN NEWS

GOSHEN — Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, appointed state Sen. Carlin Yoder, R-Middlebury, as chairman of the Child Services Oversight Committee.

“This is a new committee that was established this past session,” Yoder said. “We will review data and annual reports from the Department of Child Services to help prevent vulnerable Hoosier children from being harmed in the future.”

In addition, Yoder was appointed to serve on the following committees:

• Indiana Heritage Trust Committee

• Interim Study Committee on Common Core Educational Standards

• Midwestern Higher Education Commission

• Natural Resources Study Committee

• Commission on Education

• Regulatory Flexibility Committee

• Advisory Board for the Principal Institute

Each summer and fall — when Indiana’s part-time Legislature is not in session — lawmakers are assigned to interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.

“Study committees are an essential part of Indiana’s legislative process,” Long said. “Many of the issues that lawmakers consider during the summer and fall months are the foundation for legislation that will come before the General Assembly in the upcoming session.”

Study committee topics are assigned by the Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the House of Representatives and eight from the Senate.
