County Commissioners approve refinancing bond

GOSHEN — A reduction in an interest rate for a bond that financed the construction of the Elkhart County Correctional Facility will save county taxpayers $1.23 million.

The Elkhart County Commissioners approved selling the new bond to Huntington Bank with a 2.14 percent interest rate. The bond was originally taken out in 2004 with a higher interest rate, according to county administrator Tom Beyers, and will be paid off in 2025.

In other business at their Monday morning meeting, the commissioners hired Bolt for $2,800 plus a $565 annual maintenance fee, to oversee data integration for the planning department. The company will help get the county’s new permitting program up and running.

The commissioners also gave their approval to rezoning items given favorable recommendations by county planners recently.

A request by Sabnis Inc. for a rezoning from Residential-1 to Business-1 for property at the southeast corner of Page Avenue and Mishawaka Road in Concord Township was approved. The company plans to construct a laundry on the property.

A request by Marvin and Ruth Schmucker for a zoning change from Residential-3 to Business-3 and Business-1 for property on the west side of C.R. 13, south of C.R. 142 in Foraker was approved.

And Waste Away Group’s request for a waste handling and recycling facility located at the company’s landfill on the west side of C.R. 7, north of C.R. 26 in Concord Township was approved.
