Union soldiers, Lincoln to ‘camp’ in LaGrange

LAGRANGE — 2013 is the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. In order to celebrate this event, in February of this year, a group of LaGrange residents formed the LaGrange County Heritage Initiative. Their very first celebratory event will take place Aug. 10 around the LaGrange County Courthouse.

There will be a Civil War soldier encampment on the northwest corner of High and Spring streets behind the courthouse. The encampment will be active all day with enlistments and a book signing by Civil War historian/author of “The Men of the 100th Indiana Infantry Co. C,” Cheri Mattox.

At the courthouse gazebo there will be live impersonations of a slave and a Confederate spy along with music and entertaining presentations throughout the day.

Across the street at the public library there will be Scherenschnitte (paper-cutting design) exhibits, photos and artifacts also demonstrations and exhibits in the LaGrange Historical Society Museum on Lafayette Street

The day begins with the troops from the 44th Indiana Civil War Historical Association mustering before their bivouac. This group of re-enactors is a registered member of the Civil War Preservation Trust.

Their mission is to perfect the re-enactments to pay homage to that moment in history as well as they are able. Accompanying them, it has been rumored, will be a re-enactor portraying President Abraham Lincoln.
