LuAnn Nursing Center residents pick their king and queen for a day

NAPPANEE — Two friends shared a special royalty status for Valentine’s Day.

Daisy Hollar, 88, and Douglas Bruce, 89, were named Valentine Queen and King for the annual party at LuAnn Nursing Home in Nappanee Thursday.

“I’m pleased,” Daisy said.

“It’s wonderful,” George said.

The royal pair was selected by residents at the home, Activity Director Linda Blough said.

“We put a can out and they put ballots in for king and queen,” Blough said. “These two had the most votes.”

And from the smiles on the faces of Daisy and Douglas, it was apparent why they were chosen for the special honor.

“They are always ready with a smile and talk to the others,” Blough said.

The residents were gathered in the dining room when the activity director made the announcement, saying it was a surprise to add to the suspense for the party-goers.

While waiting for their party snacks of pretzels, heart-shaped cookies, cheese and candy, the residents received handmade Valentine’s Day cards.

Daisy enjoyed the special moment with her son, Paul Hollar, who was in attendance at the party.

“I’m proud of her,” Hollar said, smiling and referred to her as “Queen Daisy” for the day.

“She’s just a homemaker who liked to cook, knit, and make rag rugs,” her son said. “She used her hands and was very creative.”

The pair also received framed certificates proclaiming their honor of the day as a remembrance of their royal status.

“It’s wonderful to feel like royalty,” Douglas said.
