On Tuesday, 450 Jefferson Elementary School students experienced “outdoor” school. They spent the day at Camp Amigo, north of Sturgis, Mich., engaging in a variety of classes including nature hikes, marsh study and learning about birds, reptiles and amphibians. There were also wagon rides, pontoon rides, petting zoos, parachute games and other activities.
The day concluded with singing the Camp Amigo theme song, written years ago by Helen Yoder and Joy Von Bloom, who were Middlebury staffers. The last few lines of the lyrics are: “Now there’s some kids I’d like to know, they’ve got that old Amigo pep and go! Why just to look at them it’s quite a treat! It’s hard to beat the Amigo kids!”
“Indeed it was quite a treat to host the staff and students from Jefferson,” said Cheryl Mast, coordinator of the outdoor/environmental education program at Amigo.
