GOSHEN — Bethany Christian students and faculty in lower grades (four through eight) logged 151,235 minutes of reading during a three-week Read-a-thon. This equates to 2,520 hours 35 minutes and an average of about 18 hours per person.
Top overall and class readers earned gift certificates to Better World Books, school officials said. The top two readers were seventh-grader Simia Yoder with 6,061 minutes (more than 100 hours) and eighth-grader Dustin Miller with 5,766 minutes.
Other top readers by grade were:
Grade 8: Jonah Hochstetler — 5,240 minutes
Grade 7: Fiona Yeakey — 3,797 minutes
Grade 6: Lucas Klopfenstein — 4,557 minutes
Grade 5: Genesis Maust — 1,250 minutes
Grade 4: Ivonne Ortiz — 2,327 minutes
Additionally, Above and Beyond prizes were awarded to five additional students who read more than 2,000 minutes: Jacob Plank (4,256), Sid Hostetler (2,991), Sarah Hochstetler (2,905), Clara Lind (2,639) and Christy Glasgow (2,408).
In addition to promoting reading, the Read-a-thon functioned as a fundraiser for classroom and library books. Students found sponsors and raised more than $2,200 and a matching donor gave an additional $1,500 to $500 for each 50,000 minutes accumulated — for a total of more than $3,700.
