Bus driver’s condition upgraded after Wednesday wreck

A school bus driver injured in a four-bus crash Wednesday north of North Webster was hospitalized in fair condition Thursday.

John R. Wagoner, 61, North Webster, underwent surgery at Parkview Regional Medical Center Wednesday, according to Kosciusko County police. He’d been airlifted after the crash.

Wawasee school Superintendent Tom Edington says a Wawasee High School sophomore was transferred to a Fort Wayne hospital for further assessment, but her injuries weren’t believed to be serious. Edington said most students suffered bumps and bruises in the crash, while one student had a broken hand and another broke a collarbone.

The collision involved four Wawasee Community School buses southbound on Ind. 13, carrying students home from the high school and middle school.

Kosciusko County police said Cynthia K. Routh, 64, North Webster, was driving the lead bus that had stopped so a student could exit. Driver David. W. Granger, 63, Warsaw, was following behind Routh’s bus. Julie K. Close, 47, Syracuse, was driving the third bus behind Granger’s. The bus in the rear was driven by Wagoner.

Police said Wagoner’s bus collided with the rear of the bus driven by Close, and a chain-reaction crash ensued.

Police said counselors would be available Thursday at Wawasee High School and Middle School for students.

The crash remains under investigation, police said Thursday.
