Elkhart County Parks to host ‘Bark in the Park’

— DUNLAP — Ox Bow Park will be going to the dogs at the fourth annual Bark in the Park – Dog Walk and Festival Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The day will be filled with fun activities, demonstrations and pet related vendors.

A “dog walk” will be featured in the morning with registration beginning at 10 a.m. Participants can choose between a one-mile paved loop or a two-mile scenic woodland walk.

A “dog jog” is also available for the more active dogs and owners. The dog jog course will be along the two mile woodland trail. The entry fee for the walk and jog is $5 per family with all proceeds benefitting and helping to grow the Bark in the Park event. A special Bark in the Park bandanna will be given with each entry fee.

At 11:30 a.m., Elkhart City Police will present a K-9 demonstration and at 12:30 p.m. Pumpkin the Trick Dog will show off for a half hour of tricks and demonstrations.

The feature event will held at 1 p.m. with the H-D Diskin’ Heelers Dog Frisbee team. Jen Smith and her team of Australian shepherds will entertain the crowd with their Frisbee skills.

Fun, pet friendly contests and games this year will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and will include a Cutest Puppy Contest (6 months and younger), musical hoops game, dog-owner look-a-like contest, Bow Wow Ball game and a costume contest (followed by short pet parade).

Entry fees for the contests are $2 each and prizes will be awarded for the top dogs.

The Friends of the Elkhart County Parks will be selling food suitable for such an event. Their menu will include hotdogs, hush puppies, ‘pupcorn’ and puppy chow.

Michiana area dog-related vendors will be on display, including five area pet rescues with many having dogs available to foster or for adoption. They include Tiny Luv’s Rescue, American Greyhound, Pet Refuge, Pets Connect and Heartland. Each of the rescues will offer a chance to win a dog-related gift for a donation of $1 with all proceeds going to that rescue. Other vendors include Indiana Dock Dogs, dog photos and dog caricatures as well as pet supplies, food and kennels.
