Local briefs: Spelling bee champ named at New Paris Elementary

NEW PARIS -- New Paris Elementary School’s Spelling Bee Champion for 2013 is sixth-grader Riley Bales, son of Stacy Pickett and Donald Bales.

Riley correctly spelled the word “science” to win the bee in the 12th round, winning over 23 other participants in the school bee, held on Monday evening.

Runners-up for the school are sixth-grader Madeline Gawthrop, daughter of Jon and Brenda Gawthrop, and Marco Almiray-Pujol, son of Tania Manuela Pujol Luna and Alexis Almiray Garcia.

As school champion and runner up, Riley, Madeline and Marco will all spell in the Regional Bee, scheduled for March 6 at Bethel College.



‘Talk’ to DNR ice safety expert on Facebook Friday

Facebook followers of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources can “talk” online about ice safety with Lt. William Browne of DNR Law Enforcement on Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. on the DNR’s Facebook wall.

Browne will discuss guidelines for a safe and enjoyable experience on the ice, whether fishing, snowmobiling or just sliding around. Participants are invited to join the conversation and ask questions.

Future topics, instructions on how to join a conversation on Facebook, and commenting guidelines are posted at dnr.IN.gov/7315.htm.

To join a chat, go to the DNR’s Facebook wall, facebook.com/INdnr, and click “like” (if you are not already a “friend”).

You may begin typing in questions during the time slot. The DNR experts will answer questions as time allows.



Two to be selected for Lilly scholarship

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships will be awarded to two residents of Kosciusko County.

This award will be made for a four-year scholarship, which includes full tuition, academic fees and books. Thirty-seven students from the class of 2014 at Wawasee High School qualified to apply.

The deadline for the application is Wednesday, Jan. 8. All required materials must be submitted by 11:30 p.m. on that day, according to Wawasee High School officials.
