Westview Elementary students to perform 'Oliver'

TOPEKA — Excitement prevails as the cast of thousands (actually closer to 200) prepares for the premiere of “Oliver” on Wednesday night at the Westview High School auditorium.

Music teacher Elizabeth Rogers said of the massive production, “This is an elementary/school version of ‘Oliver Twist,’ written by Mary Donnelly and George L.O. Strid.

“It is a two-act musical with a lot of acting. It features nine chorus songs and many occasions for solos.

“The show runs about 60 to 75 minutes long. Two hundred fifth-grade students are involved (with about 150 of those having some sort of ‘special part’ in the show).”

Rogers says they usually do a more classic theatrical presentation and this is an enjoyable departure. She said the show has been a lot of fun for the students and they are excited.

The combination of the larger stage, full make-up and costumes is very exciting for the novice performers.
