Gas prices plunge

If there’s a silver lining to be found in today’s tough economic times, you may find it at a gas pump.

With the cost of a barrel of oil dropping below $88 on Monday due to the slowing economy and lowered demand, gas stations across Elkhart County have been following suit, dropping their fuel prices by an average of 10 to 20 cents per gallon for regular unleaded.

According to Aslam Kahoot, manager of the Goshen Marathon, 501 E. Madison St., the price of regular unleaded gasoline had dropped to $3.48 a gallon as of 8:15 a.m. today.

“A couple of days ago, it was between $3.60 and $3.70,” Kahoot said, noting the slowdown in the oil market as the reason behind the drop. “I think it’s about $90 per barrel right now.”

Kari Norment, a clerk at 7-Eleven, 2220 Elkhart Road, Goshen, indicated regular unleaded was running $3.52 a gallon at her station this morning.

“Oh yeah, gas has really gone down,” Norment said. “Within the past couple weeks, I’d say it’s gone down by about 40 cents.”

A clerk with the 7-Eleven on 100 S. Main St., Goshen, also indicated a drop in regular unleaded to $3.49 a gallon today.

Gasoline was being sold for $3.39 a gallon Monday at the Marathon station on Ind. 13 north of Middlebury.
