Apple Festival marshals to be honored Monday

John and Jane Leavitt have been named this year’s Apple Festival Parade Grand Marshals and a reception will be held in their honor on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Dal Mar Catering and Banquet Center. Apple pie ala mode will be served.
There will also be a video presenation of the entries in the Apple Dumpling contest and the Mr. Crabapple contest.
Miss Apple Blossom
The 2008 Miss Apple Blossom Pageant will be held Sept. 18 at the Apple Festival. Six contestants will vie for this year’s title. The pageant traditionally has been held with the grand marshal reception but has been moved so that more festivalgoers can participate in the pageant.
Contest Deadlines
The annual Nappanee Apple Festival is just around the corner and application deadlines are fast approaching for some events and contests, including those listed below:
Apple Dumpling Contest: Babies and toddlers 3 years and younger may have their photo submitted for the Apple Dumpling contest by Friday.
Applications can be downloaded from the Apple Festival Web site at www.nappaneeapplefestival.org or be picked up at the Chamber office at 302 W. Market St., Nappanee.
Mr. Crabapple Contest: For an entry fee of $2 and an application, Wa-Nee area “gentlemen” may have their photo entered into the Mr. Crabapple contest to earn the dubious title of the crabbiest Mr. Crabapple in town. Applications are available at the apple festival Web site or at the Chamber office.
For all of the above contests winners are determined by the most monetary votes collected with their photos.
Festival talent contest
Registration deadline for the apple festival talent contest is Friday. Age categories for the contest are 12 and younger, 13 to 17 and 18 and older. Three awards will be presented in each category at the end of the program.
The talent contest will take place Sept. 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the NIPSCO entertainment tent in the depot plaza.
Pet Fashion Parade contest
The public is invited to enter their pet in the Apple Festival Pets and Pals Parade of Fashion show to be held Sept. 20.
Entries include describing in 50 words or less the fashion attire your pet will be wearing along with any accessories and where the outfit was purchased.
Prizes will be given in several categories and those entering the most photogenic and pet look alike portions of the contest must submit a photo along with the entry by Friday.
Entries are available at the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce, Classie Lassie, Fins & Feathers, Doggone Beautiful, The Nappanee Veterinary Hospital or online at www.nappaneeapplefestival.org.

Apple Festival raffle tickets
Apple Festival raffle tickets are now available for sale. A maximum of 3,500 tickets will be sold. First prize is a $3,000 travel voucher for anywhere in the world, anytime.
Second prize is a 42-inch high definition television, third prize is an Eagle 110cc 4-wheel ATV. Other prizes include $400 gift certificate at Persing Tire & Lube, one year of free oil changes at Newcomer Service, one year of free car washes at John’s Auto Spa, $100 gas card, a foursome of golf at McCormick Creek, dinner for two at Heritage House, overnight stay at Homespun Country Inn, men’s Seiko watch, one-month membership at Nappanee Health & Fitness and gift certificates from Pages & Ivy, Hunter’s Hideaway, Martin Hardware.
A minimum of 1,800 tickets must be sold or first prize becomes 50/50 cash drawing.
Raffle tickets cost $5 a piece and may be purchased at the Nappanee Center, from any Apple Core committee member or at the festival.
The drawing will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 21. Ticket holders need not be present to win.
Save the date
A community wide celebration is being planned for the anniversary of the Oct. 18 tornado.
The theme for this celebration is “Other Side of the Storm” and a dinner is planned at Northwood High School. Invitations are being mailed for this event.
Guest speakers include Mayor Larry Thompson and WNDU Meterologist Mike Hoffman among others. Fireworks will also be a part of this celebration.
Earlier in the day a “Care and Share” benefit auction will be held. This will be a first annual event to restock the local food pantries. Donations are being accepted for auction items.
Festival of Trees
The second annual Festival of Trees is being planned at the Heritage House Senior Living Center. Anyone wishing to donate a decorated tree should contact the Heritage House. Proceeds from this tree auction will benefit the Elkhart County Council on Aging.
