Dance in the city offering tap, ballet classes

Classical ballet and rhythm tap are the newest classes being added this fall to Dance in the City, the dance program offered by Goshen Parks and Recreation.

Andrea Johnson will be teaching the new classes. They are open to people ages 5 to adult. Johnson will also be offering classes earlier in the day for homeschooled students.

All classes will take place at Goshen Parks and Recreation’s new studio located at 2211 Berkey Ave.

Johnson joins Barbara Potuck and Tricia Blosser in teaching at Goshen Parks and Recreation’s Dance in the City.

About the new classes, Potuck said, “I am thrilled Andrea is joining the teaching staff for Dance in the City. Now we will be able to offer our community a greater variety of dance styles, specifically classical ballet and rhythm tap. We are fortunate to have someone with Andrea’s training and talent. She is a beautiful dancer and loving teacher.”

Johnson has danced for 13 years, including en pointe, and has studied the Russian, Cecchetti (Italian) and Balanchine (NYC Ballet) ballet techniques.

Additionally, she has studied rhythm tap, modern, jazz, character and liturgical dance. Johnson has danced as a member of Southold Dance Theater Co. Her repertoire includes roles in the ballets “Cinderella,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Peter Pan,” “The New Adventures of Pinocchio” and “The Nutcracker.” She has choreographed and danced for Christianos Choros, Faith in Motion and River Oaks Community Church.

Johnson has attended Cecchetti Council of America International Summer School and Beyond Simple Grace. She is continuing her training at Southold Dance Theater under the instruction of Alexei Kremnev and Anna Reznik.

Dance in the City begins its fourth year this fall. Registration for fall classes is open.

Classes begin Sept. 18. For more information, contact Goshen Parks and Recreation at 534-2901.
