Families combine used items to create largest garage sale in Goshen area

WAKARUSA, Ind. — More than 200 families have consolidated their children’s clothing, toys, furniture, books, videos, games and accessories for what’s being billed as the largest “garage sale” in the area.

The event, which has more than tripled in size in the past two years, draws more than 1,200 local shoppers who are looking for like-new items for children of all ages.

In addition to baby and older children’s items, the Children’s Resale also offers a number of items for teenagers and expectant mothers.

“We have school clothes, winter coats, toys and even gifts. And, we have strollers, bikes, swings, cribs — anything you can imagine families might need — in great condition at garage sale prices,” said Sarah Freitas, who is responsible for coordinating the resale. “Furthermore, parts of the proceeds from this event are donated to charities and Christian programs in the area. With the community struggling right now due to the economy, we are providing a great opportunity for so many families in our area. The recent closing of Monaco in Wakarusa will hit many of our community hard.”

Funds from the resale have helped support local non-profit organizations, including a crisis pregnancy center, a family Christian development center and Hannah’s House.

According to organizers, more than 150 volunteers donate thousands of hours to make this event possible and clothing racks have been donated from local retail outlets including Lane Bryant, Lady Footlocker, Old Navy and Elder Beerman.

Freitas added, “Money paid by sellers to participate allow us to give vouchers to needy families in the area so they can shop too. We are proud of this event because this coordinated effort helps thousands of people in our community provide for their families.”
