In an effort to control costs, both the Milford and North Webster U.S. Postal Service offices now have summer hours in effect. The new hours began Monday and will continue until Sept. 8.

Milford’s new hours are 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday. Post office boxes will not be available between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. daily.

The North Webster Post Office is now open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturdays, the office is open from 8 to 10 a.m. Post office box access is available 24 hours a day.

Kim Yates, spokesperson for the Postal Service in Indianapolis, said shorter hours are happening at offices all over the country.

Items needed

New and gently used items (no clothing) are needed for a benefit auction to support the Syracuse-North Webster Initiative of Habitat for Humanity. Free pick-up at your house or business is offered for any items donated.

The auction will be held at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 1413 N. Long Drive in Syracuse on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. and the public is welcome to attend. Call Pastor Mark Eastway for pick up or more information at (574) 457-4111.

The Rinker Foundation has promised to match all proceeds from the sale and all funds raised go toward the next Habitat house to be built in the area this fall.

Lake patrol

Monty Lane Jr., a Lake Wawasee resident, is the newest member of the Wawasee Property Owners Association Lake Patrol. Lane brings the total of volunteer officers who patrol both Syracuse and Wawasee Lakes to 11 with five boats.

In addition to background checks, the deputies take courses on vessel control, vessel inspection, vessel stops, training in writing tickets, first-aid and CPR. The lake patrol is under the authority of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and is in its 11th year of sponsorship by the WPOA although there has been some form of lake patrol through the Sheriff’s Department for more than 40 years.

Along with Lane, other deputies include Jerry Babb, John Bickel, Gary Hentze, John Kellogg, Jim Klotz, Ken Nord, Ed Phillipp, Ed Rice, Dan Rice and Jim Tranter.

Book club

“Voyager” is the title of a new book club for adults that will begin July 27 at 10 a.m. at the North Webster Public Library in the Community Center, 301 N. Main St.

A new genre will be announced each month and each participant will read a book of their choice from that genre. “Mystery” is the genre for the first gathering.
