Police to offer personal safety course for women

On Thursday, the Ligonier Police Department will offer a two-hour personal safety course for women from 6 to 8 p.m.
The SAFE (Self-Defense Awareness and familiarization Exchange) program is a cooperative effort with the National Self-Defense Institute and will take place at the Ligonier Police Department in downtown Ligonier.
There is a $10 fee, which must be paid in advance. SAFE is an initiative to stop violence against teenagers and adult women.
Adam Amsden, a Ligonier police officer, will assist Police Chief Bryan Shearer with the class.
The course includes a video, information sharing and demonstration and presentation of self-defense technique. To register for the course, call the police department at (260) 894-4111.
American Red Cross blood drive
The West Noble American Red Cross is having a blood drive today at Ligonier United Methodist Church on Townline Road from noon until 6 p.m.
Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh no less than 110 pounds and be in general good health.
Donors must also provide identification. Donors today or in any blood drives through September 7 will be entered in a weekly drawing for a Meijer gift card worth $500.

Open House for Rev. John Lutton
The Rev. John Lutton will be honored Saturday on his 70th birthday with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m.
The event will be hosted by family members, friends and the congregation of his church, Ligonier Church of the Nazarene. Lutton has served as senior pastor at the church for more than 30 years, and has served as a member of the Ligonier City Council for much of that time.
The open house will take place at Ligonier Evangelical Church, 1911 Lincolnway South. The family requests no gifts.
Operation Foundation
Check the Operation Foundation Web site at www.operationfoundation.com for details of this year’s citywide renewal projects scheduled for July 22-29.
Applications for submitting projects can be downloaded from the group’s Web site, www.operationfoundation.com, or picked up at the Ligonier Police Department or City Hall.
New features for this summer include an evening meal for volunteers and an 8- to 12-year-old work group.
Two houses will be demolished and the planners have added stump grinding to the project list.
The first 500 volunteers will receive T-shirts.

Noble County Community Fair
The 2009 Noble county Community Fair will be the week of July 18-25 at the county fairgrounds in Kendallville.
Tickets for the grandstand shows are on sale in the Noble County Extension Office in Albion.
Grandstand shows include:
• July 19 — NTPA Truck & Tractor Pull (adults, $8, and children 10 and younger, $5);
• July 20 — Motocross Racing (adults, $8; children 10 and younger, $5; pit pass, $10, ages 16 or older);
• July 21 — Micro Sprints & Kendallville CART Club Racing (adults, $8; children 10 and younger, $5; pit pass $25, 16 or older);
• July 22 — Eli Young Band with Jessica Harp ($10 general admission);
• July 23 — Wagon Wheel Rodeo (adults, $10; children 10 and younger, $5; stage-side seating, $12); and
• July 24 — Farmers Night Out — Combine & Truck Demolition Derby.
Marshmallow Queen Pageant
The 2009 Marshmallow Queen Pageant will take place Sept. 3 at Stone’s Hill Community Church in Ligonier, and is open to contestants living within the West Noble school district, and attending grades 8 through 11.
Interested girls should contact Margarita White at (260) 894-9016. The $35 entry fee can be paid by a sponsor such as a church, business, club, or family. Contact White for other details.
