Boy remains serious after near drowning

THE GOSHEN NEWS

A Columbia City boy who was rescued from a swimming pool in Jefferson Township Saturday night remains in serious condition in intensive care at a Fort Wayne hospital.

Carter Nicolai, 5, Columbia City, was visiting a home at 58152 Old Town Dr., off C.R. 18 north of Goshen, when a witness found the child at the bottom of the swimming pool.

Those at the home pulled the child from the pool and called Jefferson and Concord ambulance crews to the scene. According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, CPR was administered before medics arrived.

According to a Jefferson Township spokesman, Chad Lehman was the first on the scene. The child was revived and a pulse and respiration were restored before ambulance crews from both departments took the child to Goshen General Hospital.

After treatment at Goshen, it was determined he should be transferred to Lutheran Children’s Hospital, Fort Wayne, and he was flown there.

A hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday night the child remains in serious condition.
