Quilt garden planting starts

By BARB STUMP
Correspondent

WAKARUSA, Ind. — The grand opening for the first Elkhart County Convention & Visitors Bureau Quilt Garden Tour will be May 23.

Wakarusa Town Council members were told Tuesday that the plants will arrive in Wakarusa today and will be planted by Susie Kulp.

A mural will also be painted on the east side of KeyBank Monday.

The flower quilt gardens and murals are the “only event of its kind in the nation,” according to organizers. Seven local communities are participating in the event.

The tour features 12 large-scale gardens and 11 outdoor quilt art murals, which are all viewable free of charge. The town has agreed to participate for three years.

This year’s flowers were provided by the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The group has also paid for the murals and all advertising.

The town will be in charge of planting flowers the next two years.

Organizers said they are “very excited about the project” and thanked the council for participating. The Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau staff hopes the murals and flower quilt gardens will bring tourism to the participating communities.

Street reconstruction

The Town Council chose Wightman Petrie, Elkhart, to serve as the firm for engineering inspection and administration services for the East Waterford Street reconstruction project. According to the contract, Wightman Petrie’s costs should not to exceed $7,560.

Maintenance Department employees Terry Flickinger and Randy Hughes will be doing most of the day-to-day inspecting.

Mark Wilson, the designer of the project and employee of Wightman Petrie, will serve as the inspector. He will be in charge of approving change orders and final inspections.

Wilson told the council that he is “uniquely qualified” because he designed the project. His firm also has all the documents for the project.

Wilson said he knew the town was looking to save money as the project is very expensive. He said there would be no hard feelings if the other company that submitted a lower bid was chosen.

In other business:

• The council approved a request from the Economic Development Corp. of Elkhart County for $1,200 in financial support for 2008. The Wakarusa Chamber of Commerce will be matching the amount.

• A request for a curb cut for Megan McDaniel at 600 E.t Waterford St. was denied. The council felt it was a busy area with Maple Lane right across the street.

Council members also felt the residence had enough room at the back of their property to turn around and drive out onto East Waterford Street.

• The council was presented with a petition about accumulation of debris on several residential and business properties.

The council has been asked to amend the junk ordinance so it can be enforced. The main complaint is building materials and how long they are considered building materials if not used.

• Residents are reminded that Saturday is large trash pick up day.

The next meeting of the Wakarusa Town Council will be June 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall. A work session will take place June 2 at 5:15 p.m.
