Winter weather delays West Noble building project

LIGONIER, Ind. — A West Noble school building project is about a month behind schedule due to the weather this winter, Superintendent Dave Speakman told West Noble School Board members Monday.

West Noble Elementary School will have a new wing which includes six classrooms and an extended learning area. The school currently has the cabinetry and light fixtures in place, and is getting close to having carpet put into all the rooms.

“We should have no problem being ready in time for the start of the school year,” Speakman said.

West Noble Middle School will have 10 additional classrooms and new restrooms. Speakman reported that six of the 10 classrooms are done and the other four are still being worked on. Windows are installed and painting is being done.

Classrooms are being added to West Noble High School, and the building will also have an new auxiliary gymnasium, technology and maintenance departments and kitchen area. Speakman hopes the entrance into the gymnasium will be all set for the upcoming graduation.

The nearby driveway and parking lot should be finished in about a week, while classroom walls are also nearing completion, Speakman said. Meanwhile, the kitchen area is completely gutted, which makes it difficult for students to eat lunch comfortably.

“It will be close to get finished in time, but we should be OK,” Speakman said.

In other news, the school board:

• Heard from representatives of the New Dawn after-school program about the past year.

• Approved changes to the elementary staff handbooks.

• Approved the resignations of Ed Phillipp, middle school science fair representative, and Rhonda Cunningham, high school prom sponsor.
