Governor signs car insurance bill

THE GOSHEN NEWS

INDIANAPOLIS — Late last week, Gov. Mitch Daniels signed House Enrolled Act 1036, authored by Rep. John Ulmer, R-Goshen, which requires proof of motor vehicle financial responsibility.

The bill makes it necessary for those who have been caught without car insurance to prove in the future that they are insured.

“There are numerous uninsured drivers on the road all over Indiana,” Ulmer stated in a press release. “I am confident that when this becomes law, the follow up will dramatically reduce the number of those that do drive without insurance. I am extremely happy to see that this bill has been signed so that it can become law.”

HB 1036 will allow authorities to randomly send letters to those who have been caught without insurance in the past, requiring them to prove that they are currently insured. If they are not insured at the time of the letter, their license will be suspended. These letters can be sent up to five years after the person was initially found without insurance.

The bill will become effective July 1.
