Somewhat puzzled, but with her usual friendly smile, I then presented her with my book “My Thoughts Exactly: The Dirt on Gardening.”
I think, with a tear in her eye (and probably mine), we hugged and she was very grateful for the gift. I asked if she would like me to sign it and she exclaimed “Oh, would you?!” A signature was made and a cherished reader made me the grateful one.
I get the “I see your face in the paper every week” or “I read your column all the time,” which I’m grateful to hear but to make someone’s later years in life a little more pleasant makes what I do all worthwhile.
Pat McKinney, it is an honor to know you. Your smiling demeanor and attitude is what makes this world a more pleasant place to live.
I love to make people smile and, hopefully, jog their remembrances of happy gardening moments of their own. After all, isn’t that what reading is about — remembering and replaying all of our past activities while at the same time experiencing newer things happening currently?
If reading my column brings pleasant remembrances and helps enlighten my readers to current trends then I have accomplished my goal.
