Elkhart General to live Tweet knee surgery tonight

ELKHART — Elkhart General Hospital will be live tweeting a total knee arthoplasty, or knee replacement surgery, at 7 tonight. The public is invited to follow along in the procedure, and may do so by following @elkhartgeneral or by using and following the #EGHsurgery hashtag on Twitter.

The goal of live tweeting the surgery is to educate patients about what happens during a total knee surgical procedure, and to alleviate any concerns they may have, health officials said.

Total knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure replacing the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability. It is most commonly performed for osteoarthritis, and also for other knee diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.

The purpose of the surgery is to restore joint function. The tweets will provide a detailed sequence of what happens during the procedure, health officials said. The patient’s safety is the number one priority during the surgery, and the surgeon has the discretion to stop the Twittercast if necessary.

When: The live Twitter surgery will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, and is expected to wrap up by 9 p.m.

Where: Follow Elkhart General Hospital on Twitter at the handle @elkhartgeneral or use and follow the #EGHsurgery hashtag.
